The HIG is guidance for third-party iOS designers and developers; however, it is gospel when creating an iOS app for an Apple business group. I led and contributed design towards a proprietary iOS application to help Beats by Dre manage aspects of their device manufacturing.

iOS 14 was in beta as we designed, which gave us a peek into the latest Apple iOS design work at the time. Though this app was purely for an internal audience, we went the extra mile to ensure it would look and feel up-to-date and relevant for as long as possible.

We ended with over 300 screens, complex but intuitive layers of modality to meet the dense needs of the app, exploration of augmented reality and OCR, and a lot of other cool stuff I can't really talk about. I learned a ton though. And got the chance to create a truly unique iOS app under the strictest of standards.

We sprinted 100% remotely to rapidly and collaboratively explore, refine, build, and test ideas for a proprietary business application used by the Apple TV+ group. I had the pleasure of co-leading this sprint with Shipra Kayan, co-directing the design work with Connor Batch, and pulling some late nights to contribute design work across the five days.

Going remote worked well since we could include team members and end-users from a variety of locations, all with hectic schedules. In fact, since this sprint (and thanks to the pandemic) I've organized and conducted all of my sprints remotely.

The business was ecstatic at both the UX work and the sprint process. They deeply appreciated us for actually engaging with them, empowering their voices, and helping create an application that met their intricate business needs whilst maintaining the elegant simplicity of an Apple product.

Apple's design standards are a big deal, regardless of the product/website's public visibility. And Apple, like most global enterprises, has hundreds of employee-facing intranets: websites used to keep their business operating.

With the HIG in hand, along with a couple of proprietary internal design systems, I led a team through the creation of a design system that better enabled the design and development of intranets that matched the aesthetic and experience standards of Apple's customer-facing websites.

We elevated the employee experience for all intranets designed by our team. And our system continues to grow and be leveraged for Apple's employee-facing sites across the world.

Producing shows and movies requires close involvement from a number of folks to manage legal efforts: clearance coordinators and managers, attorneys, administrators, various production crew, and accountants. I led a team and contributed design to create multiple responsive web applications that met the specific needs of Apple's production studio, Apple TV+.

One UX win the team and I experienced was when we learned a detail about the ratio of TV shows to movies that contradicted the assumptions of the user stories. Since we had a full understanding of the true endpoint of the user journeys (multi-million dollar studio payments), we were able to champion a pivot in the application's design.

We fought for the user and the business, rapidly explored ways to approach the changes in sketches, scoped the possibilities with the engineers, and got approval from the business to increase the scope and budget of the project to design and build one of the options. This push saved the app from failure. And it was all possible because of our understanding of the full journey, great relationship with the engineers and product manager, and willingness to have some hard conversations to do what was right.

SkySlope

Sketch to ReactJS design system

Rooted in Material Design, SkySlope's first design system fundamentally changed the way their products were made. I led the SkySlope UX and engineering teams through the process of auditing legacy systems, surveying users, iterating, conducting qualitative studies, sweating naming conventions, and generating a 1:1 match between their Sketch library and their ReactJS components.

System elements and organization

Adhereance matters with a design system. If designers a breaking symbols, that's a sign to adapt your approach. So we implemented a culture and a process of evolution. We watched how the team used the library and considered every little thing.

We shared documentation with the entire company to bring the system to the forefront. We even created an internal website, run by the UX team, and branded the system. Since my time at SkySlope, the system has grown and helped ship dozens of products.

2018

CSIS

Rebranding of a California government agency

Aligning a comittee of a dozen stakeholders, each with decades of history with their organization, to agree on a big change in their brand. I researched, interviewed, designed, iterated, and guided CSIS (csis.fcmat.org) to honor their past but look to the future.

After 30 days and a heavy focus on bringing all the stakeholders along every step of the way, the end result almost felt inevitable.

I'm proud of the process I constructed to bring champion the voices of such a divergently minded committee. The brand is definitely cool. But I've taken this process with me to wrangle even the rowdiest groups of decision-makers.

Product customization and eCommerce platform

Design and front-end dev, from the ground up, for a product customization and eCommerce platform. I started and, grew, and led the UX department for this tech start up within a promotional goods company.

Customers and store admins required very different experiences. I led the design and engineering for all aspects of the store configuration and product customization along with the storefront and checkout experiences.

We tested the details, like the optimum delay time to display the full menu when mousing over the icons. It ended up being 750 milliseconds.

Crowdfunding and eCommerce design / strategy

Brand, Kickstarter, & eComm for an ever-growing online motorcycle fashion retailer. I helped Tobacco MC launch it's company then add fuel to the fire with ongoing digital marketing strategy.

After helping raise $121k on Kickstarter, I worked with the two founders to design and build their eCommerce store. I also set up their Facebook ad funnel optimizing both the ads and website experience.

Icon set for web hosting control pannel

130+ custom icons for all the controls of Bluehost's web hosting cPanel. They we designed on a standardized grid and included a system of sub-icons to allow for a consistent way to combine functional concepts.

The system approach proved critical to strong stakeholder alignment and longterm extensibility of the set.

And for 2014 I like to think the aesthetic holds up pretty well, even today.
